No. 2 jersey now hangs in the rafters
Former 精东影业 ISD student听听returned to听Bowie High School听last night,听not as an NBA star, but as one of its own.听
The听听guard was back on campus to听retire听his high school No. 2 jersey, a number he has worn since he was a kid听鈥撎齛nd the听same number he still wears in the听. The moment marked a full-circle return for a student who once听walked听Bowie鈥檚 halls with a dream and the belief that听hard听work听could take him far.听
Cunningham attended Bowie from 2016 to 2018 after growing up in 精东影业 ISD, first at听Larson Elementary听and later at听Barnett Junior High.听听
鈥淗e was just as amazing and smart off the court when he walked through these halls,鈥 said Bowie principal Lee Jones. 听鈥淕reat kid, humble, positive, and it was very noticeable that he had a strong foundation.鈥听
Those early years shaped not only his game, but his character听鈥撎齭omething educators say was听evident听from the start.听
One of those educators was听Doris Morehead Jones, a teacher at Bowie during Cunningham鈥檚 time on campus, who said his impact went far beyond the basketball court.听
鈥淐ade was always kind, always joyful, always funny, and always made people feel seen,鈥 Morehead said. 鈥淔rom day one, Cade was a people person. That was a snapshot of the kind of man that he would become.鈥听
The celebration filled the gym with sound and school spirit, with Bowie鈥檚 cheer, dance,听and band programs听鈥撎齛long with Cunningham鈥檚 teammates, who听came听to support him as his jersey was raised to the rafters.听
Long before the accolades, Cunningham was open about his goals. He told Jones he was going to play basketball听鈥撎齛 dream she admits she initially viewed like many others.听
鈥淚鈥檒l be honest, I thought that every kid has a dream to play in the NBA,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut he asked me if I鈥檇 come and watch him play.鈥听
That invitation turned into a front-row seat听to听something special. As a听freshman, Cunningham earned a spot on the varsity team.听
鈥淭hat was my first glimpse of the athlete he was becoming,鈥澨齭he听said.听
As Cunningham鈥檚 talent continued to rise, so did the belief of those around him.听When he shared his desire to attend a basketball-focused school,听Morehead听took action, reaching out to help make that path possible.听
鈥淣ow I didn鈥檛 know anything about his stance or his position,鈥澨齅orehead听said. 鈥淏ut what I did know was that my kid had a dream. And I was going to make sure that I did everything in my power to help him reach that dream.鈥听
Entering his junior year, Cunningham transferred to听Montverde Academy听in Montverde, Florida听鈥撎齛 nationally recognized program ranked No. 1 in the country. He chose Montverde for听its听academics and elite coaching, a move that helped prepare him for the next level and听ultimately the听NBA.听
Despite his rise to the professional stage,听Morehead听said Cunningham never lost sight of who he was.听
鈥淗e鈥檚 a stellar athlete, a grounded human being, a superstar who never forgot who he was at this school,鈥 she said.听
As Cunningham stood beneath the rafters while his听No. 2 jersey was officially retired, the moment carried deep meaning for the educators, coaches,听and classmates who watched his journey unfold.听
鈥淎s we stand here today and听retire听your high school jersey, Cade, know this听鈥撎齳our teachers, your administrators, coaches,听and your friends will never forget the kid that you were,鈥澨齅orehead听said. 鈥淲e honor, respect,听and love the man听you鈥檝e听become. This was always who you were destined to be.鈥听
For Cunningham, returning to Bowie brought reflection and gratitude.听
鈥淏eing from 精东影业 is something I am very proud of,鈥澨鼵unningham said.听鈥淚 was here for two years, about seven years ago now.听I was in this school,听walking听the halls, playing here. I just had a dream. I just wanted to be great. I wanted to help my family the best I could.鈥听
That pride was met with overwhelming support from the community that helped shape him.听
鈥淭his is so special,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 appreciate the amount of love and support that听I鈥檝e听gotten since听I鈥檝e听been in the NBA. Every time I come back home,听I鈥檓听just overflowed with love and support, and that means a lot.鈥听
The ceremony concluded with students, staff,听Cunningham,听and his team听standing together to sing the听Bowie alma mater, closing the celebration with a moment of shared pride and tradition.听
鈥淐ade鈥檚 success is a clear message to our students,鈥 said deputy superintendent Dr. Jennifer Collins. 鈥淵our goals are valid, your work matters, and your future is wide open.鈥听
As his No. 2 jersey now hangs in Bowie鈥檚 gym听鈥撎齛 number tied to his name, his childhood,听and his journey听鈥撎鼵unningham鈥檚 story stands as a reminder to students across 精东影业 ISD: dreams听can start early, stay true, and lead you right back home.听
