You’ll probably start feeling a little more stress in your child…and then in yourself. This is because your child is feeling more pressure, which is actually ok. Our kids need to feel that things won’t always go the way they want and then sort through it on their own (as much as they can).

Parents, you can always step in and save the day, but I encourage you to take a step back when the stakes are low. Let them learn how to prioritize their concerns so they can better manage stress. A teacher told you to wait until the pass is available to use the restroom? Low priority – just wait. A student told you they are in crisis? High priority – tell grown-ups immediately. Our kids often treat each incident the same while they are learning how to manage stress and pressure. This is the time to help them sort through things, then let them handle low-stakes situations on their own. Don’t tell them this is low-stakes or not important though. That will make them feel judged. Instead, tell them, “I think this is something you can figure out.” And then let them figure it out.

It’s a lot to be a parent. And it’s really hard to watch your kid be sad, mad, frustrated, anxious. But all of those emotions are just as important in their growth as feeling happy, strong, and proud. I think the hardest part is that while watching your kid go through it, you are going through it as well. I can’t tell you how much sleep I’ve lost over your kids and my own. I lost sleep last night! But I just have to let my kids struggle through things and know it’s making them stronger.

You are strong parents. You are raising special kids. And you have a fantastic group of teachers working alongside you. Together, I really believe we are making each other better.

Have a great month!

Sincerely,

Stacie Humbles, Principal

¾«¶«Ó°Òµ High School

First here.
