Hi Colts!

It's been a busy and fun start to the year. I know we are all getting into our groove and hopefully settling into a routine. We have a few fun events coming up in October that I hope you will be able to participate in.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations

Hispanic Heritage Month ends on October 15th. We have been celebrating with music, decorations, games, and announcements all showcasing the influence and importance of Hispanic culture. We will end the month with our traditional Quincea帽era Day where our students come to school in their quince dresses and vaquero suits. See the attached flyer for other dress-up days.

Colt-o-ween

We will hold our annual Colt-o-ween on October 15th from 5-7pm in the MAC parking lot. This is a FREE family-friendly trunk-or-treat event for all of our future Colts and their friends. Feel free to invite friends from church, work, elementary schools, and the neighborhood to dress in their Halloween costumes and join our AHS student groups for an evening of games, face painting, and candy!聽 *There will NOT be a haunted house this year.*

Senior Events

Seniors and Senior Parents, please stay informed on all of the need-to-knows and need-to-dos during your senior year. We will talk to seniors and parents this month at our senior meeting. Also, always follow the Junior Parents, it's not a bad idea to start following the website as well to familiarize yourself with what's coming!

ASVAB Testing

Students may choose to take the ASVAB test on October 20th. This is open to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders who want to learn more about what career fits them best. Students answer questions in regard to their interests and personalities and then are given recommendations on college and career pathways. It is NOT a test that measures academics, and it is not used for state accountability. Students can sign up to take the test (see attached flyer) and will be excused from class.

October is the month when the pace starts to pick up a bit. You'll probably start feeling a little more stress in your child...and then in yourself. This is because your child is feeling more pressure, which is actually ok. Our kids need to feel that things won't always go the way they want and then sort through it on their own (as much as they can).

Parents, you can always step in and save the day, but I encourage you to take a step back when the stakes are low. Let them learn how to prioritize their concerns so they can better manage stress. A teacher told you to wait until the pass is available to use the restroom? Low priority - just wait. A student told you they are in crisis? High priority - tell grown-ups immediately. Our kids often treat each incident the same while they are learning how to manage stress and pressure. This is the time to help them sort through things, then let them handle low-stakes situations on their own. Don't tell them this is low-stakes or not important though. That will make them feel judged. Instead, tell them, "I think this is something you can figure out." And then let them figure it out.

It's a lot to be a parent. And it's really hard to watch your kid be sad, mad, frustrated, anxious. But all of those emotions are just as important in their growth as feeling happy, strong, and proud. I think the hardest part is that while watching your kid go through it, you are going through it as well. I can't tell you how much sleep I've lost over your kids and my own. I lost sleep last night! But I just have to let my kids struggle through things and know it's making them stronger.

You are strong parents. You are raising special kids. And you have a fantastic group of teachers working alongside you. Together, I really believe we are making each other better.

Have a great month!

Sincerely,

Stacie Humbles, Principal
